{"id":25,"date":"2016-10-14T10:26:47","date_gmt":"2016-10-14T10:26:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/172.104.19.187\/globalmedzradio.com\/?p=25"},"modified":"2016-11-04T20:45:03","modified_gmt":"2016-11-04T20:45:03","slug":"blog-post-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yardvibezradio.com\/?p=25","title":{"rendered":"Ethiopia"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"lipsum\">\n<p>The <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Ethiopian Orthodox Church\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ethiopian_Orthodox_Church\">Ethiopian Orthodox Church<\/a> claims to possess the Ark of the Covenant, or <i><a title=\"Tabot\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tabot\">Tabot<\/a><\/i>, in <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Axum, Ethiopia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Axum,_Ethiopia\">Axum<\/a>. The object is currently kept under guard in a treasury near the <a title=\"Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Church_of_Our_Lady_Mary_of_Zion\">Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion<\/a>. Replicas of the Axum <i>tabot<\/i> are kept in every Ethiopian church, each with its own dedication to a particular saint; the most popular of these include Mary, George and Michael.<sup id=\"cite_ref-munro-hay_23-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ark_of_the_Covenant#cite_note-munro-hay-23\">[23]<\/a><\/sup><br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The <i><a title=\"Kebra Nagast\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kebra_Nagast\">Kebra Nagast<\/a><\/i>, composed to legitimise the <a title=\"Solomonic dynasty\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Solomonic_dynasty\">new dynasty<\/a> ruling <a title=\"Ethiopia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ethiopia\">Ethiopia<\/a> following its establishment in 1270, narrates how the real Ark of the Covenant was brought to Ethiopia by <a title=\"Menelik I\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Menelik_I\">Menelik I<\/a> with divine assistance, while a forgery was left in the Temple in Jerusalem. Although the <i>Kebra Nagast<\/i> is the best-known account of this belief, it predates the document. <a title=\"Abu al-Makarim\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abu_al-Makarim\">Abu al-Makarim<\/a>, writing in the last quarter of the twelfth century, makes one early reference to this belief that they possessed the Ark. &#8220;The Abyssinians possess also the Ark of the Covenant&#8221;, he wrote, and, after a description of the object, describes how the liturgy is celebrated upon the Ark four times a year, &#8220;on the feast of the great nativity, on the feast of the glorious Baptism, on the feast of the holy Resurrection, and on the feast of the illuminating Cross.&#8221;<sup id=\"cite_ref-24\" class=\"reference\">[24]<\/sup>In his 1992 book <i><a title=\"The Sign and the Seal\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Sign_and_the_Seal\">The Sign and the Seal<\/a><\/i>, British writer <a title=\"Graham Hancock\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Graham_Hancock\">Graham Hancock<\/a> suggests, contrary to the <i>Kebra Nagast<\/i>, that the ark spent several years in <a title=\"Egypt\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Egypt\">Egypt<\/a> before it came to Ethiopia via the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Nile River\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nile_River\">Nile River<\/a>, where it was kept in the islands of <a title=\"Lake Tana\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lake_Tana\">Lake Tana<\/a> for about four hundred years and finally taken to Axum.<sup id=\"cite_ref-25\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ark_of_the_Covenant#cite_note-25\">[25]<\/a><\/sup> Archaeologist John Holladay of the <a title=\"University of Toronto\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_Toronto\">University of Toronto<\/a> called Hancock&#8217;s theory &#8220;garbage and hogwash,&#8221; while <a title=\"Edward Ullendorff\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edward_Ullendorff\">Edward Ullendorff<\/a>, a former Professor of Ethiopian Studies at the <a title=\"University of London\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_London\">University of London<\/a>, said he &#8220;wasted a lot of time reading it.&#8221;<sup id=\"cite_ref-26\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ark_of_the_Covenant#cite_note-26\">[26]<\/a><\/sup>On 25 June 2009, the patriarch of the Orthodox Church of Ethiopia, <a title=\"Abune Paulos\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abune_Paulos\">Abune Paulos<\/a>, said he would announce to the world the next day the unveiling of the Ark of the Covenant, which he said had been kept safe and secure in a church in Axum, Ethiopia.<sup id=\"cite_ref-27\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ark_of_the_Covenant#cite_note-27\">[27]<\/a><\/sup> The following day, on 26 June 2009, the patriarch announced that he would not unveil the Ark after all, but that instead he could attest to its current status.<sup id=\"cite_ref-28\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ark_of_the_Covenant#cite_note-28\">[28]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Ethiopian Orthodox Church claims to possess the Ark of the Covenant, or Tabot, in Axum.
